Prophecy

Then Jesus told them,
“A prophet is honored everywhere
except in his own hometown...”
(Mark 6:4 NLT)

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me" (Matthew 11:2-6 NIV).

John the Baptist → Elijah Preparing Way (Matthew 11:7-15; Mark 9:11-13; Luke 7:20-28)(Isaiah 61:1-3;Psalm 146:5-10)

House of Prayer/Robbers (Matthew 21:12-13;Mark 11:17;Luke 19:45-46) (Isaiah 56:7;Jeremiah 7:11)
Zeal for Your House…    (John 2:15-17) (Psalm 69:9)
Praise from Lips of Children    (Matthew 21:14-17)(Psalm 8:2)

Consider/Discuss: Did you know that Jesus fulfilled prophecies?
How do they help us believe that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah)?

Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home." And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith (Matthew 13:57b-58 NIV). (Mark 6:4;Luke 4:22-28)

Jesus’ Words from God (Matthew 11:25-27)
Sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:38-42)

Consider/Discuss: What is the difference between fulfilling prophecy and being a prophet? How do we know Jesus is a prophet, too?

Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels (Luke 9:26 NIV).

On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea" (Revelation 1:10-11;17-20 NIV).

- Ephesus    (Revelation 2:1-6)
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God (Revelation 2:7 NIV).

- Smyrna    (Revelation 2:8-10)
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death (Revelation 2:11 NIV).

- Pergamum    (Revelation 2:12-16)
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it (Revelation 2:17 NIV).

- Thyatira    (Revelation 2:18-25)
To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— that one 'will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery'—just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give that one the morning star. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Revelation 2:26-29 NIV).

- Sardis    (Revelation 3:1-4)
The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Revelation 3:5-6 NIV).

- Philadelphia    (Revelation 3:7-11)
The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Revelation 3:12-13 NIV).

- Laodicea    (Revelation 3:14-20)
To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Revelation 3:21-22 NIV).

"Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed" (Revelation 16:15 NIV)

"Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll" (Revelation 22:7 NIV).

"Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star" (Revelation 22:12-16 NIV).

He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus (Revelation 22:20 NIV).

Consider/Discuss: What prophecy of Jesus are you (not) looking forward to being fulfilled? Why?
Pray for one another - that we will all be victorious.

Let us know how to best serve you.

We will be praying for you throughout the week.

Offering is an act of worship that we do cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:6-15) to thank God for giving us everything we need to enjoy life (Acts 17:25) to the full (John 10:10)

We give at Life Bridge to empower, equip, and encourage one more to walk together with God (Matthew 28:18-20, 22:34-40).

Do not feel pressured by anyone to give a certain amount or percentage (2 Corinthians 9:7).  That is between you and God (James 4:17).  God will make it clear if you should give and the amount you should give (James 1:5-11)

We trust God to give us all what we need to do what God calls us to do.

Communion is a time when we, as a community, remember Jesus: the central focus of our faith

The original Last Supper was a passover meal that Jesus had with his disciples before being arrested and taken to his death. Jesus changed the meaning of that meal for his followers.

The meal included bread and wine, which you can supply in your own setting.

  • The bread would have been unleavened (without yeast). Tortillas, flatbreads or other unleavened bread would be the most authentic. Any bread will suffice.
  • The wine back then was not as strong as ours today.  To include younger audiences and to be sensitive to brothers and sisters who struggle with alcohol in any form, consider using grape juice instead.

Here are some Scriptures to consider in preparing to take communion together. Give one another some quiet time for reflection and prayer.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." (Matthew 26:26-29 NIV)

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. "Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." (Mark 14:22-25 NIV)

When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. (Luke 22:14-20 NIV)

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NIV)

So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. (1 Corinthians 11:27-29 NIV)
